The Rainbow Era
Following the SP's merger with the D&RGW, large numbers of Rio Grande
locomotives began to appear in the Rogue Valley. It appeared
the Rio Grande was "showing the flag" with their engines. But, it
was soon evident that the Grande's arsenal of comparatively well maintained
diesels was insufficient to supplement the SP's fleet of ailing power and
soon more and more leased and borrowed units came onto the property.
The summer of 1988 found an incredible array of diverse engines and paint
schemes in Medford. This trend contiuned for several years until
rebuilds and newer power returned the leased units to their owners.
