CORP through Cow Creek Canyon Part 3 |
| Just before crossing Cow Creek and entering Tunnel 2, the tracks cross the BLM road protected by crossing gates and flashing lights. Rick tests them and finds a bell that's not working due to a vandal's gunshot. While he makes a repair, your Web Master checks out the scenery. | |
| Just south of the south portal of Tunnel 2 is a retaining wall made of stone. CLICK HERE for a picture of the Daylight 4449 passing this spot in 1988. | |

At MP 517.1 is another dragger, this one powered by the solar panels
on the TALL pole. Rick told a story of how they had to use such a
pole at this location as thieves kept stealing the solar panels on a shorter
pole. Finally, he reasoned, the railroad installed a pole which was
taller than the thieves' extension ladder.
After testing this detector, we head south replacing more batteries at the BLM road crossing at Brandt. Then we head through Tunnels 3 and 4, both rather unremarkable and in dark hollows. |

Rick stopped short of the north portal of Tunnel 5 for me to walk in
and take this picture.
In June of 1999, I was positioned on the BLM road that runs through the cut near the hop of the hill in the background and recorded the Amtrak Talgo entering this portal. CLICK HERE for that view looking down at this tunnel. |

Less than half of the tunnels through Cow Creek Canyon have the poured concrete and nicely arched opening that the north end of 5 displays above. On the left here is the south end of 5 with the more typical angled opening and gunnited timber. |
| The shortest tunnel on this run, and the only tunnel which one can see all the way through (all of them are on curves) is Tunnel 7 shown here. This is also the only one with two concrete portals. | |

Nearing Glendale, we're out of the Canyon as we cross Cow Creek one last time at MP 509. In the distance is the first signal since Cornutt. |
| At the north end of Glendale we encounter this Tri-Color signal. We cruise on into town and take off on one of the less busy grade crossings, our work, and tour, done for this day. |
